Dont dismiss mobile IM and what it can do for you. Calling people can sometimes be intrusive, sms costs money and is a high latency communication channel. Since everyone seems to be on Google Talk or Windows Live Messenger lately, the mobile professional feels left out from the live social and business network when he is AFK (away from keyboard).
Enter Slick IM, made by Lonely Cat Games. Slick IM is in development, so the developer has made an Alpha version available free for testing. Slick IM is really slick, it manages to present a lot of functionality in a small screen, but is very configurable for different user preferences. Best of all, it supports all the major IM platforms without a hitch- ICQ, AIM, MSN, Google Talk and Jabber.

Slick IM Screen shot
I stayed away from IM for a long time for the very reason that I kept getting disturbed while I was working at my desk, and eventually took to staying invisible for longer and longer periods of time.. and finally went offline for good. With Slick IM, I find that I can connect to friends and colleagues when I am out of office, during meetings and commutes…times when I want to be ‘in the loop’ and when I dont mind being disturbed.
You can download Slick IM (Alpha) from Lonely Cat Games – here. Once downloaded, open the zip file on your phone (Menu -> Office -> File Manager app), go to the “S60_3rd_edition” folder and and then select/install the ‘s60_3rd_edition.sisx’ file.
You will need to disable certificate check in the App. Manager. Go to:
Menu > Installations > App. Mgr. > Options > Software Installation > All.
